Convection-Permitting Regional Climate Simulation over Bulgaria: Assessment of Precipitation Statistics

چکیده
With increasing computational power, the regional climate modeling community is moving to higher resolutions of a few kilometers, named convection-permitting (CP) simulations. This study aims present an assessment precipitation metrics simulated with non-hydrostatic model RegCM-4.7.1 at CP scale for decade-long period (2001–2010) Bulgaria. The simulation 15 km grid spacing uses ERA-Interim (0.75° × 0.75°) re-analysis as driving data and parametrized deep convection. kilometer-scale 3 horizontal nested into using shallow convection only. evaluated against daily hourly datasets available selected compared coarser resolution simulation. results show that represents well spatial distribution mean kilometer territory However, CP_RegCM_3km produces too much over mountains shows largest biases in summer season (above 100%). At scale, improvements are found wet-day intensity extreme autumn frequency summer. improved performance wet-hour all seasons coarse-resolution (−23% vs. −46% MAM; −10% −37% JJA; −47% −53% SON; −54% −62% DJF) (−7% −51%) winter (−34% −58%). representation was by seasons, except (−3.1% −6.7% spring; 0.5% −3.8% −7.7% −11.5% winter).

contrasts stronger, which enhances sea breeze circulations. Together, they increase near-surface moisture flux convergence and favour convective processes leading to an overall increase of precipitation over urban areas. The diurnal cycle of these effects is reflected in the atmospheric footprint of cities on variables such as humidity and cloud mixing ratio and accompanies changes in precipita...
متن کاملA review on regional convection‐permitting climate modeling: Demonstrations, prospects, and challenges
Regional climate modeling using convection-permitting models (CPMs; horizontal grid spacing <4 km) emerges as a promising framework to provide more reliable climate information on regional to local scales compared to traditionally used large-scale models (LSMs; horizontal grid spacing >10 km). CPMs no longer rely on convection parameterization schemes, which had been identified as a major sourc...
متن کاملRegional climate model simulation of summer precipitation diurnal cycle over the United States
[1] MM5-based regional climate model (CMM5) simulations of the diurnal cycle of U.S. summer precipitation are found to be sensitive to the choice of cumulus parameterization schemes, whose skills are highly regime selective. The Grell scheme realistically simulates the nocturnal precipitation maxima and their associated eastward propagation of convective systems over the Great Plains where the ...
